Not my first instinct. I've been watching that guy do stupid shit for years. They'll never be a very good teM as long as he's the go to guy. Sometimes they're pretty good when he's the second or third highest scorer. Most of the game he'll stand still on the perimeter. There's a lot more to the game than taking a lot of shots and scoring a lot of points (a bunch late when there isn't much time left and your opponent has been instructed to not foul).
Bigger reasons are that the two post players lack height, TN couldn't adjust to the zone, bad perimeter defense, and the coach not being able to make adjustments and being too stubborn to adjust his style to his personnel. Lacking an outside shooter and sucking atfree throws too.
McRae is lazy, selfish, and is a one dimensional player. He has the best shot at making it in the NBA but he isn't able to carry this team. They'd be a better team with Dane Bradshaw in his spot.
That was a pretty dunk. It made SC's top ten. A good team like Belmont never has highlights like that yet they would beat the shit out of this TN team.

He's not a good fit on a Cuonzo Martin coached team. They aren't very good together. There's a reason that S Pearl got way too many of his minutes as a freshman and it wasn't nepotism.

He doesn't score many points off of assists. He doesn't get many points off of rebounds or steals. Most of his points are after one on one moves or deep 3 pointers.
They don't make many passes in their half court sets. Once the ball is in McRae's hands everybody else might as well try to get a rebound as that's probably the only way they'll touch the ball.
He's by far the most selfish player on an average team. He makes pretty dunks, makes 70-75% of his free throws, and can knock down some uncontested threes against smaller players. He isn't consistent as a rebounder or a defender. He's outstanding at playground ball or the Rocky Top League. He's not compatable with Cuonzo Ball and CCM is too desperate right now to put him on the bench.

He's Alan Houston light with a bad attitude and just as many NCAA career wins and fewer SEC tournament wins.

When the opponent isn't in a zone he always has a smaller man guarding him. I don't know if i've ever seen him post up low with his back to the basket.
He's not dependable when you must have a basket. Usually in those situations he'll miss a 25' jumper.

It looks like Maymon isn't going to be the player that he was two years ago and Stokes won't live up to the hype. That makes McRae the team leader. If that's the case it will be another one and done in the NIT.

If hes one dimensional, Ive not noticed it as glaring. I do have to agree that IF this is so its a large part of why the team js average alongside the clueless coach. One thing about Tyler Smith, that dude filled up a boxscore like few others.

Yeah. True dat. I still say he was better than people remember. Especially relative to his raw talent which wasnt much.
One of the very few actual BASKETBALL PLAYERS that have come thru there in many moons.

Tyler was excellent at playing the Pippen role, not so good when he was supposed to be the primary option. I was a big fan, though. The guy played with effort.
Yesterday reminded me of the loss to Vandy right after the Memphis win for the #1 ranking. It was close for quite a while, but eventually the home team took over. Of course, back then it was Lofton taking all the desperation shots while everyone else watched.

Wolf, that gameplan from Martin was an absolute abomination. I couldnt believe what I was seeing. Any average high school coach would have ran them off the floor.

I'd say Marshall deserves a little more credit than that. Still, you are correct that UT didn't have to lose that game.

I am just saying looking at the athletes on the court was a joke by comparison. It literally looked like a southern baptist church league team versus a Bronx playground team.
Nothing up tempo, never ran off of missed shots. The same old lazy BS that is the hallmark of Martin. Grab a defensive rebound, cradle it like its a newborn for 8 seconds, finally pass it to the PG after the defense has been set up for a year, run some dumb play that doesnt have a prayer. Rinse and repeat.
Exchange the coaches benches and Marshall wins that game by 20 with UT's roster.

One of the very few actual BASKETBALL PLAYERS that have come thru there in many moons. Shot a lot of ill advised threes. Also was too busy having to pull his shorts up from falling down his ass to play hard at times.
