What are those places in Knoxville that Ive never been to? Jim Eds pizza or something the other in Oak Ridge. And the Hamburger place that I cant even think of the first letter to?
Also, I think Regas was the best restaurant on earth 30 years ago. It went downhill once it wasnt "local" anymore.
Darryl's was what its like to go to Ruth's Chris now back in the day. Its always surprised me how little this is mentioned by you Knoxville socialites. This is something even Rude would agree with.
In 1993 over winter break many of us at the prestigious Tennessee University of the East woke up hung the fuck over and hungry. This of course led to a decision that we should go to the Knoxville Zoo. We get there and sumbitch is closed. Why? It was 10 degrees. Well thats a stupid damn reason. So we climbed the wall when no one was looking and saw the entire park in about 2 hours including the reptile portion where the handlers were very baffled as to how and why we were there. Had this been post 9/11 I have no doubt we would have been executed with cobra venom.
Now its about 4 and we still havent eaten. We head to the strip because thats about the only place we know how to get to. They have a place called Spicy's. Wings and such. Also, they had Sam Adams beer which was a delicacy at this point in time. Every one there other than I drank illegally. I tell you right now, 6 of those at that time would do a man right.
Anyway, Spicy's had damn good wings. We had about 200 over the four of us and thats no exaggeration.

It's Big Ed's (technically in Oak Ridge) and Littons. But Roman's pizza > Big Ed's.

If Roman's was better than Big Ed's they would still be in business!
Big Ed's is to Oak Ridge as football is to Alabama. It's the only thing there to be proud of.

I worked at Darryl's 1879 on Bearden Hill when it opened around 1979. I wonder where all of the cool stuff inside ended up (the gorilla driving the bus for example).

Darryl's wasn't near the type of restaurant that Ruth Chris is. Darryl's was somewhat affordable and the food was good. Ruth Chris food is not worth the price. Unreal how expensive. Steaks are better at places like Texas Roadhouse and places like that.
Shakey's Pizza was the place to go in the 70's. One of the first pizza joints in Knoxville. I only went once, however. Big Ed's is the best! We do like Papa Murphy's quite a bit now.

Go ahead and let me have it, but I don't see anything but grease from a Big Ed's Pizza. I just don't get it. Guess that's why there is more than one pizza chain in town. Not going to pay Ruth Chris prices for a steak. I can get a great steak for 10 bucks, grill it at home the way I like it. I think Longhorn has some good steaks and a somewhat reasonable price.
Had my first visit to Littons last year, it was a good burger, but just a burger. Don't think I missed anything all these years no eating there. Dessert was pretty dang good though.

I looked up Jim Ed's and read some reviews and they get MASSACRED. Yes , I am aware this is the internet and thats how it goes but it's very interesting that post after post is the same; Filthy dirty, no utensils, paper plates. The quality of the food hardly gets mentioned due to the griping of so many fixable problems.
Finally, no credit cards? Seriously? BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Folks, that is a backwoods, crappy place for that reason alone.
"We are Jim Eds. We are famous. We are in Oak Ridge, TN. Thus, we dont have to get out of the slavery era and get a credit card machine. Why pay a 28 cent fee to CC issuers on a $14 charge for a 14" cheese pizza. Do you scum know what my profit is on that order?"
Probably $13.00 but I digress. Any place that doesnt accept cards in 2013 should be razed. The reason they wont bend is: 1)they are in a remote, rural, nothing happening section of the world 2)Cash only is the very definition of money laundering. Bet this Jim Ed guy was a Moslem 3) Stupid sheep go there every week to keep up the myth that their left behind town is a national treasure.

shakey's was my favorite restaurant as a young 'un. that's where I'd always pick for my birthdays
the guys that managed it, Jess Ward and Calvin Shipe, we're the original owners of the Half Shell on Homberg at Mohican. they built the restaurant in Western Plaza when the original building burned to the ground. The new Half Shell building was supposed to look like an oyster shell from an airplane.

I went to Darryl's and Half Shell a few times. I remember a lot more about the girls I took than the food we had.
In North Knoxville, Harby's has some decent pizza and Sam & Andy's still makes a good sandwich.

And it does not change, and is the EXACT same as it was 30 years ago. If you go to Big Ed's thinking to get some faggot loving place of the current age, you can skip the 30 minute drive over there. The ones crying about it being dirty, and no utensils and such are pussies. Plain and simple. Rarely do places live up to what they are billed as. I love Big Ed's because I went there as a little kid, and it makes me remember the good old days, when I went all the time. People of Knoxville can ruin anything. Stay your ass in Knoxville and go get Papa Johns you bunch of faggots.
