We quit subscribing to the print edition about a year ago.
Now you can't read online for free anymore.
So long, jerks. I don't think this ends well for you.

Seriously, they have to be the biggest clowns of all time. They've created a huge mess.

I get as annoyed with paywalls as anyone but frankly can't blame them. Why should any media company give out its content for free?

Their ads on that site are HUGE, numerous and horribly disruptive. I don't think they are donating those ads to the business community.

knoxnews.com is different from the online edition. The latter is a daily image of the printed version. They'll probably strip more out of knoxnews.com to create an incentive for people to pay for the online paper.

As long as they are able to sell ad's that you have to see and deal with, it's not free. I remember when they did this with the sports. It failed. It will fail again. Any of the local TV stations have better online content.

AJC recently went to pay to view for all featured online content. I don't think the experiment is going well.
That said I think the trend will continue. The big boys are doing it & not looking back.
What I would pay for is an aggregator that put together a deal for like $10 - $20/mth that got you premium content to all the major papers and magazines. For me as a consumer that's what it's worth.

In the early days of the net there was a terrific link site called sportspages.com.

Oddly, our little ol newspaper here in Jeff City has been behind a paywall since 2006. Never free. Of course the only other option for this news is someone posting from a fake topix account. So it works well by default.
KNS should have never given it away. Now they are stuck. There's no way to make up paid column inch advertising with web buttons. Its like.Alabama's AD budget compared to Tusculum.

Why should any media company give out its content for free? Someone else is already giving it out for free. If you follow the right people on Twitter, you can find out something long before KNS or any other paper puts it online. I know where KNS is coming from with this. But unless everyone else is charging for content, this plan will not work. Seems like KNS tried this about 10 years or so ago and it didn't work then.

I've only read like 2 stories from them the last 3 months. I think the pandora model is the way to go. Have pop up ads and even videos for free or pay to go ad free.
