...and
Dan Mullen The Vandy coach The Memphis coach Stoops Fuentes (Va Tech) Brady Hoke Phil Fulmer (bleh!) Gary Patterson Chris Petersen
Anybody else and might need to just keep Butch another year or two. But no extension. Butch can leave if he thinks he's worth more than $4.1mm/year.

The first call should be to Bob Stoops. And they should flat out ask him what it's going to take. And then do what Stoops says it will take.

I'm beginning to like the James Franklin idea.

Stoops wouldn't be a good fit due to his and UT's recent Title IX issues.
I wonder if it's worth spending $20 million to change the coach when the next one won't bring a guarantee of winning more games. At this point, unless Peterson, Patterson, or Fuentes were sure to come, I'd just as well let Butch close out the year and then decide about a change. Outside of Alabama, the schedule lightens up from here and most were expecting 7-5 or 8-4 this year. If the team can decide to start playing they could even go 9-3. I'm not predicting that based on their performance so far, but I'm leaning toward not firing him immediately, not extending his buyout, and maybe he'll go away like Cuonzo did. These failure payments need to stop. Butch gets a 3-year buyout as of 3/1/2018. I thought that it was $2.5mm/year, but Hyams indicated that it's $2.0mm/year.
I'd add Chip Kelly to the upgrade list. Don't want Petrino. Don't want that A-hole Franklin. Leach at WSU is probably too nutty for Knoxville, and his record isn't all that anyway. The ex-Louisville QB at Purdue would be a good choice, but he may not leave after only one year. Les Miles probably wouldn't work. I would be in favor of David Cutcliffe... maybe get Tee Martin as his OC and the HC in waiting. The current Vandy coach (Mason?) might be a good replacement for Butch. Lane Kiffin... hell no!
It would be good to get some VFLs on the staff. Marion Hobby. Terry Fair. Maybe Jim Bob Cooter as the HC if he actually graduated when not climbing through windows and crawling into bed with random women.
Maybe Rodriguez (West Va and others) or the former Rutgers coach (Schiano?) if they've not been in any scandals or coaching disasters.
The Dan Mullen stock has been in free fall for a couple of weeks now.

Not making an excuse for Butch... if his recruiting has been as good as advertised (and the coaches are competent teachers) he should have backups ready to fill in. But the injuries have been crazy for 2 straight years. Not just the quantity, but it seems like the best players have been getting hurt.

But these aren't normal circumstances. The fact is that Florida has had just as many injury issues as UT has had over the past couple of years, and the SEC East has been gawd awful. Butch still had the talent to win it at least one of those years, but found a way go screw it up. Injuries or no, there are no excuses for his ineptitude.

"Not making an excuse for Butch". I simply made a comment the the injuries have been unprecedented. I'll give Butch many props if he can get to 8-4.

The Dan Mullen stock has been in free fall for a couple of weeks now. "These failure payments need to stop." Totally agree. "Chip Kelly" Upgrade yes. Although I'm concerned about the PAC-10/12 style offense (defense?) he would bring. "Don't want Petrino." Would be an upgrade imo, but seems questionable. "Don't want that Franklin" How so? Like why is he a salty guy? "Les Miles probably wouldn't work." True. "I would be in favor of David Cutcliffe..." Sorta maybe. "Tee Martin" Didn't he run off to LA and is LA all the way? "The current Vandy coach (Mason?) might be a good replacement for Butch." C list maybe. "Lane Kiffin..." Maybe as OC. His personal life might be an issue, but im not salty about him having left for USC anymore. "Jim Bob Cooter" Heard he probably won't leave the NFL because that would screw up his chances of getting an HC job there? If not he might be a #3 choice or something. "Maybe Rodriguez (West Va and others) or the former Rutgers coach (Schiano?) if they've not been in any scandals or coaching disasters. " Never heard of them. I would be for getting someone who can compete for National Championships, preferably proven at doing so. "Dan Mullen" This one I don't get. Would say, no.

Wouldn't surprise me to see:
Kyle Whittingham - Utah
Brohm - Purdue
Patterson - TCU
DJ Durkin - Maryland
Franklin - PSU
Mullen - Mississippi State
Even Les Miles, Cutcliffe, or Fulmer (huge mistake to retread Phil IMO) would not shock me.
Charlie Strong is in play per USA Today.

Rich Rod and Schiano were flying high a few years back. I believe that Rich Rod turned down Bama and then they hired Saban instead.

Justin Fuente might be my top (preferred), reasonable choice... but he's in a good spot at Va Tech. Maybe he could be lured by doubling his $3.3mm salary.
