"He has consistently been an 8-4 or 9-3 type coach. That's what he was when we hired him and that's what he still is. That's what he is going to be. He will not seriously compete for championships in the SEC."
Agree.
"It will take another year of disappointment and stagnation for the right people to want to make a move."
So sad, but true.
"Do the inevitable immediately."
Yes, we as a fan base have suffered more than enough.
Les Miles is available. Chip Kelly kinda want ta return to NCAA level football.

Sad but true relic. Our leaders don't look at Tennessee football the way all of the other major programs do. Hopefully we can get an AD in here that will bring in a winner.

9-3 or 8-4 every year would be near TN's all time best coaching records. The problem is when there are 5-7 and 6-6 seasons mixed in.
Butch is about as good as TN will realistically be able to have as their HBC. Fulmer and Majors coached at TN only because they played at TN. There are no former players that are in their league. Jim Bob Cooter and Tee Martin are about as close as there are. JBC had his drunken legal problems and Tee was recorded taking a shot at Hurd after he committed to TN. Tee's Hurd comment is now less of a big deal but he's not a proven in-game coach. He is a proven recruiter. Moot argument though... his wife won't let him leave LA.
TN's best chance for being a player in big time college football is to stick it out with Butch but to make a condition of his employment that he changes up his offensive philosophy. TN needs a new AD to make that happen. Butch probably would make changes in order to keep his job. Bear Bryant reinvented his offense and then dominated CFB for about the following decade. See "wishbone" offense for the details. He also convinced the rednecks in power in Alabama to let him sign black players after USCw kicked Bama's ass in 1970 featuring a brutha.
DeBord should be reassigned to an Assistant AD job. He's just running what Butch wants him to run. He ran a traditional I-formation at Michigan when he coached Brady and when he won the 1997 Natty as the OC. But that offense is too dated for this era of CFB. His two year contract was extended into early 2018.

Petrino and Briles are too sleazy. Leach is too nutty. Kelly would possibly go back to Oregon... he's maybe TN's best chance to upgrade if the Duck bridge was burned. Les Miles is a nut and is as stubborn as Butch as far as making changes. Plus, how good is Les really going to be without the Louisiana recruiting base.
There are too many big time programs to compete with for the best available HCs. Notre Dame, Texas, USCw, Oregon, Auburn, and LSU to name a few. Probably Alabama, Clemson, Florida State soon.
Who you gonna get? Just another Butch-type most likely.

Get Peyton Manning and Jon Gruden. Or wait until Tom Brady retires and get him.

Thoughtful posts from Thunder.
I was shooting off from emotion, as I am sometimes wont to do.
Realistically, how we finish this year and then how next year goes with whatever off season adjustments (or lack thereof) are implemented, will determine the direction of Jones future as HC @ Tennessee.
Nothing can be expected to happen without the next AD in place, which is, as has been noted elsewhere, contingent upon the hire of the next Chancellor to replace Cheek.
Go Vols.

I understand all of the apprehension Thunder. Realistically though, Tennessee's demographics are getting better and better each year. Nashville is growing very fast and Memphis and Knoxville are growing as well. Tennessee is in a better recruiting situation now than it ever has been. I know everyone thinks we need a great recruiter, and we do. But we also need to place some importance on X's and O's as well. The best coaches in the country aren't just good recruiters. They can also put together a gameplan and adjust accordingly. That's the next step.

At this point in time, no way to say much of substance beyond idle speculation. Your comment here reeks of a woe is us, loser/defeatist mentality.

Auburn might not be in the market right now, but TX, LSU, USCw, and Notre Dame are most likely getting new coaches... LSU will probably hire Ogre based on the game tonight. TN will get sloppy seconds. They won't be able to do better than Butch right now. Actually Butch's biggest fail this year was USCe. No problem with the TX A&M loss... there were lots of injuries. Bama too.. there was very little that TN's coaches could have done. You don't run his ass for blowing the Cocks.

I'm not sold on Butch and IMO he must modify his offense in order to survive at TN. Running him off would be a disaster right now. He's recruited well every year and he shouldn't be evaluated until after the next signing class. If there's a huge drop off and he doesn't win the next three, then his seat deserves to be blazing hot next year. The rate of attrition is too high as well, but now that a lot of the problems are gone... Butch should get this one reset on attrition.

Thunder, I agreed in a previous post that we cannot and will not run the Butchster at this point in time due to the turmoil/turnover in UT Administration.
Cart before the horse concept.

There is also no point in speculating on what the scenario as to Division 1 Head Coaching Carousel 2017-8 will look like.
