"Then Baker Mayfield finally had enough chances that he took advantage of them and give the guy credit, he is a pretty good player." Jerry Glanville agrees. (ref: TB show archives/9.17.15 @ roughly HR2@ 55 minutes)
"Tennessee didn't just lose that game. They blew a lead that was 17-0 at one point and 17-3 midway through the 4th quarter. It was the biggest collapse by Tennessee in the history of Neyland Stadium. It's not just the loss, it's the fashion in which they lost. They lost because the 2nd half was egregiously mismanaged." Yes. According to Tony Robinson, in all of the 4th quarter - Tennessee ran a total of 6 offensive plays.
"Tennessee gets a decent lead. Butch Jones can taste a win so he starts to get tight and try not to screw it up. The offense does nothing else and eventually the defense gets tired, or the other team gets a chance and they come back and win" Difficult to dispute this assertion.

Don't agree that TN didn't lose because I'm a sheep that's incorrectly citing lack of talent. The defense ran out of gas and the O-line needs help. Also, I don't agree that it was a choke because of the play calling. They didn't abandon the pass for the run. They probably should have puckered up more and given Hurd another 10 rushes.
What the coaches failed to do was to keep the clock running when they sat on the lead. One possession in the second half was 44 seconds. Had TN been able to actually burn some clock, the defense would have had something left. Or if they had the depth they might have been able to overcome the quick offensive possessions. They compounded the depth problem by wearing out Jumper instead of giving Kirkland more PT. That was a choke... they were afraid that Kirkland would make critical mistakes and instead left Jumper in the game because they trusted him. Jancek said that it was his decision to keep Kirkland on the bench so that the chemistry was not disrupted.
It's not that they went conservative. It's that they didn't know how to execute the decision to go conservative. In addition to leaving 15-20 seconds on the play clock, 18 incompletions also failed to milk the clock.
Failing to slow down the OU blitz was another reason for the fail. They sent defenders on about every play, but never payed a big price for it. Ellis got behind the defense in the third quarter, but he dropped a touchdown pass. The passing attack failed to exploit the areas left open due to the blitzes.
Coaching fails AND a thin, inexperienced roster meant TN was not going to hold off an upper level Power Fiver for the full 60 minutes.

Game management Fail. If so, Agree. This one still hurts.

It's weird. They got tight yet they were still snapping the ball with 25 seconds left on the clock. It's really quite bizarre.

It was also strange that they kept substituting on offense. It didn't seem to matter against OK though... OK seemed like they were leaving the same 11 on defense and just kept dictating the play.
I think that Butch is trying too hard to scheme into favorable match ups. If that's it I hope it gets to the point that the O-line gets considerably better and they can just line up and play. Every damn play it looks like the coaches are substituting to try to get into favorable combinations. Please... just put the best players on the field and let them get into a rhythm. Substitute when somebody is tired or injured or if the down and distance warrants it... such as a sack causing a third and long.
And huddle up and go with an I-formation now and then. This Butch offense is too much in game attempted manipulation from the headsets. Just let them effing play. Simply give the ball to Hurd until he's stopped.
