Football season is here again and there is a lot of excitement around the Tennessee program. Butch Jones has added a lot of talent with back-to-back top 10 recruiting classes. I hope some fans will pump the brakes a bit on the expectations.
Barring no more significant injuries, especially to Dobbs, UT should win 8 games. I was leaning toward 9 wins when camped open. But the injuries sustained so far have me a bit concerned.
When looking at the schedule, Alabama can be penciled in as a loss. I think UT is still a year away from competing on the field with them for 60 minutes. Add Missouri as another loss for several reasons. UT has yet to beat Missouri since they joined the SEC. The games is on the road. The game is in late November. Hard to say what the weather will be like when that games rolls around.
That leaves a few games are toss-ups going into the season. Oklahoma is beatable. OU has size and speed, but are opting for an unproven QB. There's the gorilla in the room called Florida. UT is better than Florida. But the same can be said last year and UT totally screwed up that game. Hard to pick UT to beat Florida until they do it. Arkansas will be no pushover because of their physical style of play. It remains to be seen how UT can match up with a team like that since there are so few of them. Georgia is another team that has Tennessee's number, but UT has been close the last two seasons. They are loaded, but have a QB that hasn't shown a lot. Tennessee can win that game as long as they don't let Nick Chubb go wild on them.
I'm not putting South Carolina in that toss-up category because UT has beaten them the last two years. UT should make it 3 in a row.
Aside from injuries, the thing that has been from going to 9 or even 10 wins is this team and coaching staff has to prove they can beat teams better than them or as good as them. We have yet to see that. They've come close, but have found ways to lose those games. UT also needs to re-establish a home field advantage. If UT can win all its home games along with wins over Bowling Green and at Kentucky, there is your 9 wins. They have to prove it first.
No doubt it will be a fun season as long as Dobbs stays healthy. Go Big Orange!

Agree with MRM on about all this.
One thing about Mizzou, they shouldn't have anywhere near the defense they've had last 3 years.
Still can't count it as a likely win until we show it.
9 wins should still be the target despite injuries although 8 would be acceptable.
Lose to Bama/Mizzou. Split with OU/Florida.
In that scenario, GA is looking more and more like the season maker as MP said on Twitter last night.

Sept 12th about the high point of the season for the Common Vol Sheep. Talk of recruits, bricks & Nike is all fun. Some of you dumbasses might even book a room in Atlanta for SECCG. Then reality hits. Butch & crew have to play games against other teams in Power 5. You'll be talking Gruden sightings by Christmas

All the rest, except for the cupcakes, have to be toss-ups at this point. We just don't know enough yet. Disagree on South Carolina. Spurrier hates to lose, perhaps more so to the likes of Butch Jones and Tennessee. Would not suprise me at all to see SC come in here and steal one this year. Agree that it's going to be a fun ride this season. Keeping expectations in check. Hoping for the best, but won't be jumping off any bridges if things don't go our way. 2016 is probably the year of put up or shut up for Jones and Co. I do like the addition of Mike Debord and look forward to seeing his tenure play out.

One (at least) unexpected loss is very likely with this uptight staff.
Be happy to see that corrected but not thinking it likely.
