A final shot: Without a clear set of criteria your analysis is just JM pissing in the wind In JM's honor, then:

I believe you. A bit before my time but didnt realize Issel did that well. Seems to me Mashburn's career wasnt what it looked like it might be due to injuries. I had the opportunity to see Issel play in his early days in the ABA quite a bit when he was playing with Artis Gilmore and Louie Dampier for the Kentucky Colonels. My Dad traveled quite a bit on business in those days (during my junior high/high school days) and he would sneak me out of school sometimes and take me with him some. His sales territory included Kentucky, Virginia, and North Carolina (along with Middle and East Tennessee) so we'd go watch the Colonels, Virginia Squires (a couple of those years when Dr. J was there) and the Carolina Cougars (Billy Cunningham was a Cougar). Those were really fun days and being able to spend that time with my Dad as a kid was awesome. Hijack alert. When the NBA swallowed the ABA, guys like Issel and Doc still dominated. The ABA improved the older league, the same way you could say the AFL helped the NFL. Dad took us to the 1st ABA All-Star game, which was played at Hinkle. The East came back to win behind Connie Hawkins & Dampier, but they had apparently already voted for MVP because Larry Brown won it from the West. We went on the court after the game & I told Louie he should have won it. In the meantime, Dad said he'd been asking some tall guy where he could get a red-white-and-blue basketball for us and we said, "Dad, that was George Mikan."

Somebody sent me this link last night. A guy looks at just about every relevant team in the nation and limits to first five. It's a lot cooler looking than mine that's for sure. He seems more set on having a true PG best I can tell. JM has long stood up for Haislip which I've always scoffed at but looking at this Im thinking I'm wrong. The glaring weakness of the UT team is a center and while Haislip isn't Shaquille he is the best option if considering a real game. He also puts Watson at the point replacing Lofton and Tobias Harros over Grunfeld (bullfuckingshit on that). 404 would like the UK team with Wall and Davis replacing Walker and Bowie. Bama team gives me reservations that the guy knows what he's talking about as its a good bit different than Koz says which means it's almost certainly wrong. LSU has damn Tyrus Thomas on it. Lol. Still cool, check it out. elitedaily.com/sports/college-basketball-rivalries-all-time-teams/852172/

I didn't say necessarily replace them but they'd get time. You omitted everyone from the Cal era at KY including your others grouping

I saw that on Butlerhoops. Can't say that I'm much impressed, though.

So, a one year guy who was a second team All SEC pick over a 4 time first team all SEC selection, a 2 time first team All America, and a member of the Olympic team? Now, that's just plain stupid. Thanks for that warning. Saved me some time not opening the link.

Cowboy, I agree that the format is well done. It's the picks that are underwhelming.

Anthony Davis was consensus national player of the year. Nuff said John Wall was consensus all American & SEC POY So against their contemporaries they pass muster Davis had almost inhuman competition for that honor...

Grunfeld also couldnt have been more average in the pros. I suspect that when Whore and others point and laugh at sheep talk it's Grunfeld who carries the flag. The more I read the more I see he wasnt that good.

I've never known anybody to claim Grunfeld was outstanding in the NBA. He was a little small for a forward and a little slow for a guard. He was very good in college though. SEC POY in 1977 with King. A better defender in Mears' zone than in the NBA when having to play man-to-man. He started as a freshman when there was still a separate freshman team. He would have had even better numbers had King not joined him his 2nd year at UT. He was a smaller, far more skilled version of Jarnell Stokes. Ellis was probably better, but Dale played out of position. Ernie played the exact position he should have at UT. Ernie played on the wing but easily posted up smaller defenders. Like King, he was a great passer. Whenever either was double teamed, they'd find open teammates with ease. King and Grunfeld both had seriously high basketball IQs. Grunfeld kind of played the spot that Moore is playing this year, just far better at it. He was a complete college player, much like King he really didn't have a weak area in his game. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/ernie-grunfeld-1.html

Ellis WAS better. It's not arguable.
