He lost his last NFL gig too late to land another comparable job. Michigan gave him a nice cushy $150,000/year job to be a part of their athletic department. They thought enough to do find a spot for him. What they have actually done is to add another football coach when they are already at the maximum allowed by the NCAA. He was put in charge of Michigan football during the time that there was not a head coach.
I'm sure that he has been asked about the gap in his on-field coaching career. If he didn't have a valid reason, maybe his hiring manager will eliminate him as a candidate.
Maybe he needed to slow down for a spell after coaching in the NCAA and the NFL for thirty years. Seems like there is a coach at Ohio State that went on hiatus. I wonder how that worked out for all involved.

OK, let me just ask you this question: If he is so highly thought of as a football coach, then why has he been making sure the chlorine in the pool is the right level and that the steeplechase pit is full of water for track meets for the last two years instead of being on a football coaching staff somewhere? Again - this one just doesn't make sense. Wow. How did he figure out pool and pit maintenance? Did he learn that in the NFL or did he stay at a Holiday Inn Express?

Don't know, but that's what he's been doing for the last two years. Good football coaches don't stay unemployed very long, and especially in the NFL. Those guys recycle like a tree hugger recycles paper plates. Still looking for a reasonable and logical reason as to why you bring in a coach with no experience running a spread offense to be over an offensive staff that runs a spread offense. Simply doesn't make sense.

You are wrong again when you say he has no experience with the spread.

I've posted directly and indirectly nearly a dozen reasons why he's a candidate to consider.

Family member) that made the 80 hour a week grind of being an assistant coach undoable. His admin job really was a gift from the coaching fraternity that never lets one of their own starve. Is he now up to the 80 hour asst coach workweek? That's the question Id ask before the offensive philosophy stuff. I'm not close to the situation and they usually don't broadcast the sensitive personal stuff but I wouldn't be surprised if there's not more to the story

DeBord? TN needs to replace the bald, cracker OC named Mike with a bald, cracker OC named Mike.
Zach Azzanni? I want to keep him on the staff. Not sold on him as the OC.
George Quarels? OC - HELL NO! Position coach? Sure.
Kippy Brown? My first choice. But TN won't pony up the money it would take and there may not be interest from either side.
Dooley? STFU Kiffin? STFU Fulmer? STFU Gruden? STFU
Chaney? I wouldn't be opposed to it, but he just took the Pitt OC job.
Roper? Gran?
One of the 50% OCs at TCU? I'd rather have an experienced 100% OC.
NC guy? NC State guy? Va Tech guy? Notre Dame guy? Marshall guy? Rich Rod coaching tree guys? Kelly tree?
Actually I'd probably prefer the guy at Oregon over even Kippy. I doubt if they'd let him go though.
I'm leaning toward hiring DeBord and promoting Azzanni to co-OC / OC in training / passing game coordinator / game manager / play caller. DeBord can then retire in a few years and Azzanni takes over as OC.

Butch knows and he also knows if there is a problem that would prevent the guy from going full speed.

BTW, Butch (and probably Hart) are playing the UT fan base like a violin.

It's being reported that the Atlanta Falcons and three other NFL teams are pursuing DeBord to fill positions.

I remember Bajakian telling the guys at last year's HS coaches' clinic that they kept their spread offense simple enough for the freshmen to understand. I think even I followed most of what he explained.

Butch is about to make the biggest decision of his coaching career other than accepting the UT job.
the money is there to make a BIG hire. Ill trust his decision until it proves wrong.

Imagine my surprise to open the ap for the first time today and see Thunder whoring for coaches. Actually it's for the Vols. I also fought for Worley and fight for Nathan Peterman. It's a war against the Jethro NegaVols.

I'd prefer that they use the assistant coaches budget to pay the position coaches very well, not just spend it all on the coordinators.
