This is pretty far fetched, but after listening to GQF ripping Butch for waiting this long before playing Dobbs I told my buddy that maybe Butch looked at the schedule and knew exactly what he was doing - the goal is getting to a bowl game. Every QB was injured last year. Whichever QB begins the season was destined to be injured by mid-season. Worley gives you the best chance of getting the wins against USU and Ark State. Then comes the part of the schedule with little chance of not losing at least four games. So maybe Butch used Worley to get to 2-0. Figured he'd be done at some point during murderers row. Then after Worley has been destroyed, the replacement QB will be far more mobile and a better fit in the scheme. They'd also have has about two more months of taking reps in practice and learning the system. Now you've got a fresh, more mature replacement at the point in the season when it is critical to get wins in order to become bowl eligible. Naw. Nevermind.

Long story short, whichever QB starts the season, they are going to be broken by midseason. Makes more sense to play your experienced guy first, then the younger one(s) late. Makes more sense than to start the young, inexperienced QB(s) early until they break and then bring in the washed up veteran that wasn't able to hold on to his job late.

It's BS. Dobbs didn't play because he didn't look like he could play at all the entire summer camp. He and his family initiated the RS strategy.
Worley looked halfway decent to very good until the Florida game. Once he began to falter there was no way Butch was going to go to the bench after what happened in Gainesville last year.
It's second guessing at it's finest. Butch deserves criticism for TONS of things, including last night when he didn't give his team even a chance to win, but not this specific thing.
Also, if he had held Dobbs out for the reasons you cite it would require shrewdness and intellect. Of which he possesses none.

So why go through the charade of pretending to redshirt him instead of making him the number 2 and get him a few reps here and there and then make the move? Having Peterson as the backup wasn't just plain stupid, it was idiotic and moronic.

If Dobbs was this good, he would have played from day one. He couldn't beat out Peterman for #2.
Now, I have heard some people say Butch knows this season was going to be a tough one and the plan was to get through this year the best you could and have Dobbs for 3 years. I don't know if I buy that, especially when they continue to recruit top QBs.
I'll say this about Dobbs. He looked pretty good in his first start last year and really tailed off after that. Will he do that this time or will need take that next step? I guess we'll see that the next couple of games.

Absolutely agree.
People were saying the exact same thing about Dobbs after his first few quarters. Now these coaches will start scheming around what his weaknesses are.
Id bet that by the end of the Vandy game many of the sheep will be lamenting that if only Worley hadn't got hurt we make a bowl game.

I didn't say Dobbs. I said start out with Worley and ride him until he breaks.

I'd discount last year. He was a true freshman in the SEC.
