Wasn't he one of the SPS posters that talked about meeting up to whip somebodies arse? I believe he and PV are buddies. They are (were). PV's batshit performance on the Political board even drove poor OMG away.

I was at the very first SPS meet up a ricks place in about April 2001 I believe it was. Al had organized it and he and I made a pretty fast friendship. While I never got really close to him outside of SPS meet ups, I always had a feel about him that he was a genuine good guy. Wow was I mistaken. Like buckeye Benny said, you cannot put anyone on a pedestal because they will surely let you down.
I remember he and wooly carter went to the swamp in 01 when flabby drained that bitch.

His signature on the other board:
Honing the Barbed Edges of Freedom
He posted a few times since being un-monked. Glad he didn't end up landing on this board.
I met him a couple of times, probably at Section 119 before a basketball game or two. Maybe a few tailgates back in the day. Saw his posts, heard his calls to Basilio, watched him dancing on The Summitt in his war paint. Hard to believe that he was doing this. Can't excuse what he did in any shape or form. It's hard to say, but he needs to be locked away permanently.

Just when ya think we've seen it all...
I remember "The Bandit" at the Buzz era games. I didn't know he was "TN Big Al" from SPS until MP told me a few years ago.
I don't really remember much of him on SPS other than some blogs that I didn't read.

Alan Ross and I were "friends". That is to say, we met via the SPS Board, we talked quite a bit about his personal life because of his connection with Food City and my wife in the food business. Met his wife at least once. Took an epic road trip to Gainesville in December 2001. Talked with him pretty extensively about his whole "return to the Catholic Church" long before this episode ever started. Again after he decided to go off the grid, so to speak, the whole monk-life deal. I understood, but didn't understand, at the same time. Seemed like more a giving up on the working world, coupled with this epiphany to get closer to God. Never saw this coming. He was so proud of his military turned Blackwater son, Billy.
TBA was a work of art, no doubt. Anybody who ever was around him knew that. Gonzo comes to mind. Bi-Polar? I know nothing about that so I can't comment, but dude was different for sure. But who would ever suspect/expect someone of this behavior? I guess the only positive is that he chose (apparently) to fess up right away, rather than make them prove charges brought by a child who was 4 at the time. His defense??? Again, I know nothing about Bi-Polar "disease". I just know I'm both shocked and saddened by the whole situation. I guess this is why you don't put someone into the "Hall of Fame" before they're dead. You just never know.

I don't even remember how I found out about SPS. I do remember it was on the downside and wasn't too long before the exodus to to SSS. Maybe it was longer than I think, because I do remember reading his posts before the whole monk thing.
I feel bad for you that thought of him as a friend. This world is hard enough to get through without losing faith in humanity just from reading the damn news. It's really depressing when it's thrown in your face.
I don't know much about criminal law, but the prosecution resting their case the same day it started seems like they feel pretty good about where they are. His admission of guilt to the facts is enough to damn him for me. I've seen horrible mental illness in people I loved very dearly. However, if you are making day to day life decisions and functioning, the concept of right and wrong is still in you.

Great post Link.
Like you, I was "Friends" with him. Back when we used to have several gatherings a year and I had the tailgates, we all were his "Friends".
If he did this, he was definitely Bi Polar. Because he was one of those guys that would do anything to help somebody.
I am usually able to make a joke about anything. I can't make a joke about this.
I really liked the guy. I was stunned when he went off to be a monk.
I am floored that he did this. If he hadn't already admitted it I would never believe it.
However, I have seen, that anybody can do about anything. Nothing REALLY surprises me anymore.

The good news is that TBA is forgiven in the big picture.

Like buckeye Benny said, you cannot put anyone on a pedestal because they will surely let you down. I think that was the meeting that just about everybody posting on that board at the time showed up. Seems like we met out on the patio. What I remember most about that meeting was my nephew, HOOF, bringing OSKY some Krystal Sunrisers. I think that is the only time I ever talked to TBA. I do remember when he went off to be a monk. As somebody else said, didn't understand it at all.

On second thought, the meeting I referenced wasn't at Rick's, it was at the place on Kingston Pike across from Copper Cellar, whatever it was called then.
Forgive the mis-remembering (thank you Roger Clemens). I'm getting old.
None the less, I remember TBA being at that meeting, too. Seems like that was right before his monkdom began.
