I don't even wanna get involved in the Cuonzo debate--I mean, after all, he's gonna walk away a millionaire either way--but are these players talented or not? I haven't kept up with who is on which side, or if some are actually on both sides, but it's a little confusing.
I read posts that say we have athletes, not basketball players or that it's a joke to think any of them will play in the NBA. Then, I read how great Pearl or Byrd or whoever would be doing with these same guys.
Which is it?

Man, some of em, no they all got talent. It's just that from day to day game to game that talent becomes latent or it expresses itself.
Not trying to go all mumbojumbo New Age here, but I guess what I'm (poorly) attempting to articulate, is that in a nutshell - Talent is there but it is the function and purpose of Coaching to understand what the raw talent is, and then to optimize it individually, then to blend and tweak and develop the parts within a system.
Is that coachspeak or what.

I heard a great point on the radio yesterday. Stokes gets a ton of rebounds, but a lot of them are after he misses his own point blank shots. He might pick up three or four rebounds on a single offensive possession.

Relic, how would the Xavier games relate to your point? Same opposition, dramatically different performance & results.
TG-O, I've heard that, too. He still gets a lot of "legitimate" ones, tho.

What Relic said should be a new book in the Bible.

If you're on the side that believes this team has talent, then Martin's coaching stinks. If you're on the side that believes this team has no talent, it's also Martin's fault for his talent evaluation.
Personally, I think there is some talent on this team. But the coaching style is not taking full advantage of talent of this team. Also, your two big men are easily removed as being a factor when taking on taller players.

It is seriously the exact same team as Jerry Greene's. Excellent track and field athletes but probably not even one pure basketball player.
Only difference is Green was DeanSmith by comparison.

Thompson is a ball handler. That outside shot is suspect though. Looks awkward and doesn't go in the hoop very much.

There's talent here. I don't know what to think anymore. Not only has development been lacking, a few players have actually regressed.

There is talent, no doubt, but there is a library of books on how to stop us. We dont do anything different than we did two years ago. We have 2 strong but undersized bigs, a scorer on the wing, and a bunch of role playing guards that each do something well. Now, Cuonzo says we cant run with both bigs in the game, which I agree with, but why not run teams early, subbing more, utilize the athleticism of Armani Moore, Hubbs, Richardson, McRae, then pound teams in the 2nd half with both Maymon/Stokes in at the same time?

Excellent post by JMShipe. It also gives the clear answer as to Fartins unbelievably inadequate aptitude for the job.
Run and press like crazed dogs? When my entire team has the same skill set? That aint what I was taught goddammit by Missah GeneKeady!
Pitino would win the national title with this team.
Speaking of, if UTAD and people like Haslem, Cheek, et al that really run things cared you go and get Pitino after the Celtic debacle.
Alabama and UK (along with everyone else now) kick out loser asses because they care more. Period.

Nice angle, wolfgang. Made me think. Same opposing team, yes, but too many other variables to make the comparison valid.

I definitely think there is plenty of talent. Just isn't being used properly most of the time. They are much better than what they are playing imo.

I think Cuonzo and his team have to be literally pushed to the brink before they play.
I think that's why they blew the doors off Xavier the next morning after losing to UTEP.
